Available Sailing Season 2009
ESCAPE TO A LAND BY THE SEA . . .
Leave your cares behind . . . escape to lighthouses, lobsters, and the lure of the sea;
historic inns and schooners, a coast that's craggy and clean.
The Maine Windjammers and the Historic Inns of Rockland invite you to experience the Maine Coast in a land-and-sea escape that offers relaxation and eco-conscious adventure.
The Maine Windjammer Association and the Historic Inns of Rockland have teamed up to offer vacationers a "Land-and-Sea 'Scape" in the summer of 2009. This four-days-at-sea-and-three-days-on-land package provides an opportunity to experience life aboard an historic sailing vessel, plus a luxurious, relaxing stay at an historic inn.
History buffs, eco-conscious travelers, and sailors alike will be excited about the "Sea 'Scape" portion of the package, which includes a four-day cruise on one of the twelve venerable vessels of the Maine Windjammer Fleet. Dedicated to protecting the islands and marine life for generations to come, windjammer captains are conscientious caretakers not only of the heritage of their tall ships, but of Maine's beautiful, rugged coast as well. They are rigorous in their efforts to support eco-friendly sailing; visits to the islands implement "Leave No Trace" policies that minimize any impact on the environment. Each windjammer cruise includes a Down East Lobster Bake on an island beach; while ashore for this traditional all-you-can-eat feast, guests can explore its unique ecosystem. Powered by wind, the sailing schooners' use of fuel is minimal, and, of course, captains and crew take care that nothing harmful to the sea gets tossed overboard. Shipmates always end a windjammer cruise with a satisfied feeling of eco-stewardship.
Before or after your four-day escape to sea, enjoy luxurious accommodations for a three-night "Land 'Scape" at the Berry Manor Inn (one of Rockland's four historic inns).The inn is within easy walking distance to the galleries, museums, boutiques, and restaurants in Rockland and is certified by the State of Maine as a Hospitality Environmental Leader dedicated to sustainable eco-tourism. Your innkeepers believe the green scheme involves more than changing light bulbs and recycling and last fall initiated a three-dollar-per-guest donation to local, eco-friendly organizations as a means to offset their own carbon footprint. Yet, eco-friendly doesn't mean luxury is sacrificed at the Berry Manor Inn, Rockland's premiere bed and breakfast inn.
With tickets provided to visit the Farnsworth Museum, the Andrew Wyeth Art Center, and the Maine Lighthouse Museum, you can round out the theme of your "Land-and-Sea 'Scape" vacation by viewing painted landscapes and seascapes, among other artworks and attractions.
Your "Escape to Land and Sea" offers total travel flexibility. After booking a four-day cruise aboard one of the twelve tall ships in the fleet, ask your Captain to add the Land 'Scape portion of the package and specify that you want to stay at the Berry Manor Inn. The Land part of your Land-and-Sea 'Scape package offers excellent value with additional features included:
