As gas prices rise, memories of $5 per gallon gas in 2008 gets Rockland innkeepers thinking about easing pain at the pumps for their guests. Historic Inns of Rockland and Eastern Tire & Auto Service’s Drive Green, Not Mean Tips
.) Use Pedal Power – Opting to walk or ride your bike to your destination is of course the healthier choice for you and the environment! Each of the Historic Inns and Eastern Tire & Auto Service, Inc. are all walking distance to the downtown shops and restaurants.
.) Keep your car and engine in top performance by performing routine basic maintenance such as opting for the “No Fueling Package”. Changing your air filter can improve your car’s gas mileage as much as 20 percent. Under inflated tires negatively impact vehicle performance, tire and tread life and fuel efficiency by as much as 7 percent.
.) Make sure your car is properly tuned or even opt for Eastern Tire & Auto Service’s complete fuel injection cleaning at a 25 percent discount with the “No Fueling” package. Regular vehicle maintenance improves gas mileage by an average of 5 percent.
.) Plan your errands and consolidate your trips to conserve fuel. Car pooling is cool!! Grab friends and drive together on your errands, to attend events or for a weekend getaway. This not only means one less car on the road but it will give you plenty of time to talk and laugh together.
.) Before leaving on a trip or traveling to a place you have never been before get specific directions on how to reach your destination. This will save frustration and extra miles running around looking for where you are trying to go. Historic Inns of Rockland send detailed directions to help avoid wasting fuel finding the way.
.) Drive with a soft foot. Avoid jack rabbit starts and stops, and make smooth and gradual lane changes. Anticipate changes in traffic lights and coast to a stop or slow for a green light change to avoid unnecessary idling. Driving with a soft foot can improve your gas mileage by as much as 30 percent on the highway and 5 percent with city driving.
.) Avoid unnecessary idling. Idling consumes a half to one gallon of gas per hour so if you aren’t ready to move in one minute or less – turn off your car! Don’t warm up your car in the driveway, rather warm up your car by driving - start your errands at the furthest point – it is better for the engine.
.) Slow down. In Maine the motto is “life the way it should be”; while visiting Midcoast Maine obey the highway speed limit of 55 mph where most cars are the more fuel efficient. Gas efficiency is improved by 7-percent for every 5 mph slowed below 60 mph. Driving with cruise control on the highway helps to maintain a constant speed and saves gas.
.) While driving in Maine, check www.511maine.gov or call "511" for up-to-the-minute travel information, road conditions, accidents or any major delays before they affect fuel consumption.
.) Travel light. The more weight carried, the more fuel burned. Rent bikes or kayaks locally to save on gas. Remove the golf clubs, rock salt or bike racks if you aren’t using them. Use your Historic Inns of Rockland reusable shopping bag instead of heavy luggage to reduce the weight or save on plastic.
