Walk to the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse
A walk to the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse is one of the best ways to immerse yourself in a classic New England fall. Located off of Jameson Point, this 19th-century lighthouse has a rich history. Beginning as a mile-long breakwater to protect the town of Rockland, the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse was later added to help with navigation on the Bay. What started as a beacon soon gave way to a proper lighthouse. Though innkeepers are no longer present at the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse, the U.S. Coast Guard still manages the light and fog signals.
The granite walkway of the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse, an engineering feat in itself, allows visitors to appreciate the ocean and coastline up close. As you stroll along the breakwater, breathe in the salt air of the sea and take in the quaint sight of the Rockland coast. Listen to the call of the seagulls and other seabirds as they fly around looking for a fresh catch. Spy Crockett Point and the U.S. Coast Guard station from the lighthouse. There is much to enjoy about this unique piece of Maine history.
Though a remarkable local fixture, the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse isn’t the only lighthouse in Midcoast Maine. There are several other Maine lighthouses in the area that are worth looking into as well. Our favorite lighthouse-focused day trip includes the following:
- Owl’s Head Lighthouse overlooks Penobscot Bay from a different vantage point. Sitting atop a striking 80-foot bluff, it features panoramic views of the Bay and nearby islands. While you’re there, visit the Owl’s Head Transportation Museum to learn about the evolution of various modes of transportation.
- In nearby Camden, the Curtis Island Light is visible from the shore. While the lighthouse, located on an island in the town, is not open to the public, it’s a beautiful sight just off the Maine coastline.
- Hop on a ferry to Isleboro and visit the Grindle Point Light Station. This recently restored lighthouse is open for business!
- Take a boat tour for an up-close look at one of the most iconic Lighthouses in Maine, Heron Neck Lighthouse. Perched upon Green Island, near Vinalhaven Island, this lighthouse protects ships entering Hurricane Sound.
- Wander the grounds of the charming Brown’s Head Light Station on the island of Vinalhaven, and soak up the stunning views of Penobscot Bay from here.
